레드 제플린의 이 명곡을 기타로 카피해 보려고 가사를 받아 적고 유트브로 들어보다 이 곡의 구조를 이제 새삼 이해한것 같다. 중세 잉글랜드식의 고전적 포크 계열의 주제에 순차적 변주로 포크에서 락, 재즈, 메탈로 나아가는 8분여의 이 곡은 그야말로 록의 역사이자 집대성이다. 재즈의 느낌은 드럼이 들어가는 중반 후기에 살짝 일어난다. 그 이후로는 잠깐의 블루스 분위기도 있다.

출애굽에서 바빌론 유수까지 경과 시간은 역대상에 나오는 야곱(이스라엘)의 족보를 근거로 추정해 보면 아무리 길게 잡아도 1000 년 안팍으로 보인다. 요셉이 애굽의 총리가 되고 야곱의 12 아들들이 이집트에서 번성하다 출애굽하는데 까지는 불과 3 세대 밖에 걸리지 않는다. 출애굽한 이스라엘 백성의 수가 60만 이상이라면, 야곱의 아들들로만 이런 인구가 될 수 없고, 야곱을 따라 오거나 이후에 이집트로 추가유입된 상당한 인구가 있었다고 봐야할 것이다. 바빌론 유수(기원전 5세기)가 역사적 사실인 점을 볼 때, 이로부터 고고학적 증거가 희박한 그 이전의 구약 서사까지의 시간간격이 그리 멀지 않은 것이다.
솔로몬 이후 분열된 유다왕국과 이스라엘왕국의 존재는 어느 정도 역사적 실체를 갖고 있을 것이다. 마치 우리가 단군의 고조선을 보는 시각처럼 말이다. 바빌론 유수기 잡혀간 이스라엘 랍비들이 조로아스터교의 일신교로부터 강력한 영향을 받았다는 추정은 그렇다치더라도 규범과 서사를 통합시킨 경전을 태초의 세계와 그 묵시론적 종말의 선상에서 산출한 것은 일대 사건이다. 물론 신약이 없었다면, 그 문체가 이와 너무도 상이한 구약만으로는 제한된 영햔력만을 가졌을 것이다.
어느 민족이 이처럼 장대하고 파급력 깊은, 서사와 규범을 통합한 경전을 만들 수 있었을까? 그리고 그것이 그들 만의 것이 아닌 보편성에서도. 서경, 시경, 불경은 막스 베버가 보기엔 기독교가 도달한 보편주의에 못미치는 경전이다. 과연 그런가?
또다른 고대왕국의 탄생
역사서 사무엘 상하는 유대왕국의 성립과정을 보여준다. 출애굽 후 모세와 여호수아의 인도를 받으며 광야에서 40년간 방랑하던 이스라엘의 12지파 백성들은 약속의 젓과 꿀이 흐르는 가나안 땅에 갖은 전쟁 이후 분산 정착하게 된다. 출애굽 세대와 모세도 밟아보지 못할 땅에 후손들이 들어선 것이다. 이후 제사장 겸 영도자인 사사들의 통치를 받던 이스라엘인들은 다른 민족들의 왕국처럼 자신들도 왕이 필요하다고 제사장 사무엘에게 요청함에 따라, 그는 야훼께 이를 물어보고 승낙을 받는다. 야훼는 그들의 요구에 자신의 전지전능함을 불신하는 실망감을 감추지 않지만 마치 필요악처럼 왕을 세워줄 것을 약속한다. 그들은 이제 야훼와 제사장들에게 뿐만 아니라 왕과 그의 궁전, 궁신들에게도 공납의 의무를 져야 한다.
사무엘에게 기름부음 받아 이스라엘 최초의 왕이 된 사울은 초기에 이민족들과의 전쟁을 승리로 이끌며 존앙받는 군주로 등극했지만 야훼는 그의 후계자로 그의 적통이 아닌 다른 지파의 목동 다윗을 지명한다. 왕의 두통을 하프연주로 달래도록 궁전에 불려갔던 소년 다윗이 무릿매로 골리앗을 쓰러 뜨리고 이후 수많은 전장에서 전쟁영웅으로 백성의 인기를 휩쓸자 사울은 시기심으로 다윗을 죽이고자 했다. 사울은 그가 자신의 후계자로 낙점된 사실을 알면서도 이를 부정하고자 했던 것이다.
사울의 추격을 피해 자신을 따르는 600 여명의 무리와 함께 도망을 거듭하던 다윗은 심지어 이스라엘의 주적이다시피한 블래셋 족속에게까지 가서 신세를 지게 되며, 이스라엘과의 전쟁에 까지 동원될 뻔 했다. 이후 계속되는 사울의 추격을 따돌리던 다윗은 두번이나 사울을 죽일 기회가 있었으나 그렇게 하지 않았다. 그가 기름부음받은 왕이기에, 아무리 자신이 그 왕위를 이어받는다 해도 그럴 수 없었다.
사울이 블래셋과의 전쟁에서 치명상을 입고 도주하는 중 그의 심복은 이미 생명이 경각에 달한 사울이 자신을 치라고 명했다면서 그를 죽이고 다윗의 진영에 이를 알리러 갔다. 새로 왕이 될 이에게 공로를 인정받을 것으로 예상하고 갔던 그를 다윗은 죽인다. 이후 기름부음 받은 왕으로서 다윗은 이스라엘과 유다 통합왕국을 세우는 과정에서, 사울의 잔당들이 그의 살아남은 자식들과 함께 다윗에 항거하는 중 한 잔당에서 내부 반란이 일어난다. 사울의 아들을 죽이고 역시 공로를 위해 다윗에게 간 반란자 역시 처단된다.
고대 왕국의 형성과정을 보여주는 단면인데, 다윗이 사울과 그 아들들에 대해 보이는 태도는 이중적인 면이 있다. 명분상 다윗이 그들을 직접 처리하지 못하더라도 고대 왕국의 안정적 왕권을 위해 그들은 정리되어야할 걸림돌이다. 하지만 다윗은 그들을 배척하지 않는다는 진정성을 반역자 처단으로 보여줌으로써 그에 대한 백성들의 신망을 더욱 두텁게 했다. 통합의 정치력을 보여준 것이다. 그 아무리 야훼의 뜻에 따랐다 해도.
