In this respect, what one can say to those who make assertions about the truth and reality of sensuous objects is that they should be sent back to the most elementary school of wisdom, namely, to the old Eleusinian mysteries of Ceres and Bacchus and that they have yet to learn the mystery of the eating of bread and the drinking of wine.

denn der in diese Geheimnisse Eingeweihte gelangt nicht nur zum Zweifel an dem Sein der sinnlichen Dinge, sondern zur Verzweiflung an ihm; und vollbringt in ihnen teils selbst ihre Nichtigkeit, teils sieht er sie vollbringen.
This is so because the person who has been initiated into these secrets not merely comes to doubt the being of sensuous things. Rather, he is brought to despair of them; in part he brings about their nothingness, and in part he sees them do it to themselves.

Auch die Tiere sind nicht von dieser Weisheit ausgeschlossen, sondern erweisen sich vielmehr am tiefsten in sie eingeweiht zu sein, denn sie bleiben nicht vor den sinnlichen Dingen als an sich seienden stehen, sondern verzweifelnd an dieser Realität und in der völligen Gewißheit ihrer Nichtigkeit langen sie ohne weiteres zu und zehren sie auf; und die ganze Natur feiert wie sie diese offenbare Mysterien, welche es lehren, was die Wahrheit der sinnlichen Dinge ist.
Nor are the animals excluded from this wisdom. To an even greater degree, they prove themselves to be the most deeply initiated in such wisdom, for they do not stand still in the face of sensuous things, as if those things existed in themselves. Despairing of the reality of those things and in the total certainty of the nullity of those things, they, without any further ado, simply help themselves to them and devour them. Just like the animals, all of nature celebrates these revealed mysteries which teach the truth about sensuous things.
동물 또한 이러한 지혜로부터 제외되지 않고 오히려 상당히 근본적으로 이러한 지혜에 적합한 것으로 드러난다. 왜냐하면 동물은 감각적인 사태 앞에서 이것이 그 자체로 있는 것으로 가만히 있을 수 없고 이러한 실재에 절망하면서 이것의 없음에 관한 충만한 확실성에서 지체없이 나아가 이것을 먹어 치운다. 그리고 동물처럼 전체 자연은 이렇게 계시된 신비를 축복하는데, 이 신비는 감각적 사물의 진리가 무엇인지 가르쳐 준다.
