올해 정초부터 놀게 되면서 필사적으로 새 일을 찾으며 임시로 할 만한 일도 알아봤다. 새 일을 잡더라도 비자변경이 필요해 또다시 암울한 대기상태가 몇 달이고 지속될 수 있기 때문에 당장에 돈이 될 만한 일을 찾아야 했지만 그게 쉽지 않다. 한국에 비하면 더없이 그런 임시직이 너무도 제한적이다. 다행히 전에 같이 일하며 이후 연락하고 지낸 지인을 통해 프랑크푸르트 인근에서 이사일을 하루, 페이스북 광고를 통해 알게 된 한국업체의 프랑크푸르트 메세 전시 보조일을 이틀 한 것이 1월의 전부였고, 내일 당일치기로 이 업체의 컨테이너 하역일을 하러 간다.

1월 메세 전시 보조일은 가정용 과채전용 분쇄기에 들어가는 채소와 과일을 다듬어서 수시로 전시장의 쇼호스트들에게 날라다 주는 일이었다. 원래 5일치 일이었는데 피치못할 사정으로 이틀밖에 할 수 없었다. 그 사정 중 하나는 이렇다.

이틀째 일이 끝나고 마부르크로 가기 위해 프랑크푸르트 쥐트 역으로 갔다. 이 때는 마침 독일 장단거리 열차 파업기간이었지만, 열차가 아주 제한적으로나마 다니기는 해서 파업때문에 할까말까 고민되던 이 일을 그래도 한 것이었는데, 둘째날 밤에는 열차가 아예 끊어져 버리고 말았다. 초저녁부터 기다리던 많은 승객들은 열차를 기다리다 기다리다 이리저리 웅성거리며 대체교통편을 알아보고 있었다. 파업기간이라선지 명확하게 열차취소에 대한 안내방송이 없었다. 다만 도이치반 앱에 밤 1시가 넘어 프랑크푸르트 중앙역에서 카셀 방향으로 가는 열차가 있다고는 떴다. 이날은 토요일에서 일요일로 넘어가는 추운 밤이었다.

중앙역으로 가는 고속철을 타기 위해 남부 역에서 레기오날을 타고 하나우 역으로 이동했다. 배도 고픈 와중에 춥기도 해서 일단 맥도날드에서 햄버거와 커피를 시간간격을 두고 먹었다. 3시간  정도 기다려야 했기 때문이다. 한산한 고속철을 타고 프랑크푸르트 중앙역에 도착해서 카셀행 열차가 예정되어 있는 선로로 갔다. 근 6시간 동안 기다린 끝에 이제 집에 가는구나 싶었고, 아무래도 늦은 귀가로 다음날 일이 어렵겠다고 업체 담당자와 이미 소통한 후였다. 그러나 이 열차도 취소되고 말았고 카셀방향으로 가려던 적지않은 승객들은 동분서주하며 S반을 타러가거나 택시나 우버를 알아보고 있었다. 프리드베르크까지는 새벽까지 S반이 다닐 것이지만 그 이상 너머로 가야할 사람들은 그야말로 막막한 상황에 처한 것이다. 나는 한 밤을 버티기엔 그래도 프랑크푸르트 쥐트나 하나우 보다는 큰 역사에 있는 것이 한결 낫겠다는 생각도 하면서 일단 사람들이 쏟아져 나오는 플랫폼 출입구에서 동태를 보고 있었다.

이때 한국인으로 보이는 여성 5명이 내 근처에서 우버를 알아보고 있었고 이들도 모두 마부르크 방향이었다.  관광객이라는 40대 여성 한 명에 나머지는 교환학생들이었다. 결국 나는 이들과 우버로 잡힌 SUV 차량을 함께 타기 위해 역사 서문으로 나갔다. 차를 타고 가는 중에 관광객 여성의 권유로 나는 소말리아 출신의 40대 우버기사에게 얘기를 해야했다. 추가요금 건 때문에. 많은 인원이 탄 만큼 기본요금 외에 추가요금으로 기사는 40유로를 불렀다고 했다. 기본요금은 120유로였다. 나는 현금이 지폐로 딱 20유로만 있었다. 나는 우선 기사에게 나의 사정을 얘기하고 동승하는 사람들이 대부분 학생들이라 주머니 사정이 좋지 않다고 하면서 추가요금을 20유로 해줄 수 없겠냐고 했는데 기사는 흔쾌히 수용했다. 그리고 나서 기사와 이런저런 얘기를 나누며 약 1시간 거리의 마부르크에 도착했다.

그는 본업으로 전기회사에서 일하고 있었고 주말에 우버로 부업을 한다고 했다. 전기일을 하기 위해서 아우스빌둥 3년을 거쳤다고 한다. 특정 분야의 전문직이 아니라도 거의 모든 직업 영역에서 아우스빌둥이 요구되고 있기 때문에 당장 돈이 안되더라도 장기적으로는 아우스빌둥을 밟는 것이 좋겠다는 생각이 들지만 하루 하루 쫒기는 상황에서 직업교육의 기회는 그저 그림의 떡으로만 보일 뿐이다.

레드 제플린의 이 명곡을 기타로 카피해 보려고 가사를 받아 적고 유트브로 들어보다 이 곡의 구조를 이제 새삼 이해한것 같다. 중세 잉글랜드식의 고전적 포크 계열의 주제에 순차적 변주로 포크에서 락, 재즈, 메탈로 나아가는 8분여의 이 곡은 그야말로 록의 역사이자 집대성이다. 재즈의 느낌은 드럼이 들어가는 중반 후기에 살짝 일어난다. 그 이후로는 잠깐의 블루스 분위기도 있다.
